Books I'm Dreading

Photobucket

But at the same time, I'm also kinda excited to read them, obviously, because they are all on my 'to read' list... but for different reasons I have been putting them off.

The Canterbury Tales: this one was assigned reading from my Humanities class in college, meaning that during the first week(the week I pretended to be studious) I read halfway through the first chapter. I think 'assigned' books tend to give me a mental block.

East of Eden: Steinbeck. I can't decide if I hated Grapes of Wrath because I was too young to appreciate it, or if I just don't like Steinbeck(or that particular book). In either case, I've been putting this one off.

Les Miserables: I am actually REALLY excited to read this one, but as you can see, it's about as big as they come. My goal for 2011 is to read 50 books. I think I have to save this one for book #50, just to make sure I have enough time to finish. Matt is reading it right now and loving it.

The Brothers Karamazov: Ugh. Dostoevsky. Author of my least favorite book, possible ever(The Idiot). I have heard good things about this book though, and I figured I needed to give him at least one more chance before I swear off Russian Literature... okay, so I can't dot that, I still need to read Crime and Punishment and Anna Karenina.

David Copperfield: I love Dickens, so like Les Mis, I am excited to read this book but am intimidated by the size. Isn't it a beautiful copy of the book though? I'm slightly obsessed with leather bound books right now.

Ahhh, my 'must read' list is about as long as Les Mis. Have you read any of these books? Any words of wisdom or other books you consider 'must reads'?

I think once you get into david copperfield you should be okay. As dickens starts slow but picks up. I however loved crime and punishment its a little dark but for a classic it was awesome I had to read it in high school for AP it was one of my favorites. Steinbeck on the other hand.... you'll have to let me know how that one goes ; ) Les mes .... long but wonderful!!!

Oh that's awesome! Love the list! Loved Les Mis, but not so much Bro Karamazov. I remember reading East of Eden in HS, but can't remember loving or hating it. and I don't think I've read David Copperfield but I've meant to for a while- maybe we should read it at the same time so we can chat about it as we go?

I haven't read any of those, but I'm interested to hear what you think of each of them. I'm reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes right now.

Loved Loved David Copperfield, didn't really like Brother Karamazov, East of Eden...sad and depressing, Les Mes was Pres Kimball's favorite book besides the scriptures. Loved the play. But reading the classics helps you do really well on Jeopardy!
