a few stories from Vandenberg

*One night, around twilight (the time of day, not the book) I was feeding Natalie by the window which overlooks a large parking lot. All of the sudden, I head yelling.

'Drop your weapon! Drop your weapon! Raise your hands above your head and DROP YOUR WEAPON!'

Uh, what? I looked out the window to see two security forces(AF police) SUVs(sirens flashing) and a dozen security forces guys standing behind the open car doors like you see in movies. It might be just me, but do military uniforms tend to make everything about ten times more dramatic? So, anyways, a tree branch was blocking my view of whoever they had their guns trained on. By then, Matt was over and could see better than me and while I would love to tell you that we witnessed a dramatic arrest... such was not the case. After about five minutes of Matt and I watching in stunned disbelief that such a thing was happening before our very eyes, guns were lowered and the supposed gunman walked over to join the crowd of airman. A training exercise. Thanks for scaring the pants off me.

*We went one afternoon to watch the a rocket launch, ya a for reals going into space ROCKET. Cool huh? Well, it might have been if it wasn't for this infernal fog which made the launch impossible to see. I know it happened though, because it was amazingly loud. I didn't take any pictures because I didn't want to miss 'the moment' by taking pictures of fog, but Matt's friend from OTS documented his similar experience here

*In the middle of the night some raccoons were doing battle below our window. Matt got up and looked at them with the 'emergency only' flashlight (shhh, don't tell) and wanted me to come see too. I didn't, raccoons are creepy and scary and I hate them. And fighting raccoons are doubly scary and creepy.

*Although the rocket launch was a disappointment, the space shuttle Endeavor's flyover (marking the end of the shuttle program) was not. It was much closer than I expected it to be, and it was pretty awesome. There is a general here (one of the first women astronauts) that actually flew the shuttle. We've driven by her house.
Space shuttle Endeavor's final flight before it's retired.
